A hammertoe is a contracture or bending, flexible or rigid of the 2nd through the 5th lesser toes. Initially flexible, eventually rigid these hammertoes rub inside your shoes and cause painful inflamed corns.
Signs and Symptoms include Pain and irritation with redness of the toe. Eventually a corn (build-up of skin) will develop on the top or on the side between your toes.
The cause is muscle and tendon imbalance leading to a changing structure in your foot. High heels, flatfeet, the wrong shoes, bone spurs plus other causes can lead to painful hammertoes.
Treatment non-surgical includes trimming and padding by the podiatrist. You may be provided with instructions and pads to apply yourself. Try changing to shoes with more toe room and using arch supports plus special shoe padding to re-align a flexible hammerto
Corrective surgery is indicated for a rigid deformity and involves straightening of the toe. This is a minor in office procedure that can be performed with local anesthesia. Occasionally additional procedures are performed to support stability and a straight toe.
We may use a pin to hold a severely bent toe or when multiple toes are corrected. We sometimes reposition, lengthen and adjust tendons that pull on the toes to balance the forces.
