BURSITIS
A Bursitis is the inflammation of a bursa which is an enclosed sac of fluid. A bursa when not inflamed is designed to provide cushioning and ease movement of skin across bone, muscle across muscle, muscle across bone and tendon across bone.
Signs and Symptoms it will fill with extra fluid, making the affected joint painful and more difficult to move. A bursa can get infected and will become inflamed, red hot and swollen.
Causes are when a bursa gets overused, irritated or injured usually from repetitive physical stress and micro-trauma. Bursitis can develop secondary to a variety of arthritic conditions.
Types of bursitis are named by their anatomical location.
Retro-calcaneal bursitis is located at the back of the heel bone. Metatarsal bursitis is located by the ball
of the foot. Bursitis can also occur at the site of a bunion or hammertoe.
Treatment is accomplished through a combination of:
- eliminating the irritating cause
- therapy (done in our office)
- contrast baths with deep heat
- oral anti-inflammatories
- injection of cortisone
- arch supports
- wider and deeper shoes
- padding and strapping
- surgical correction
